Recycling saves money
Last year Londoners saved £30 million by recycling. If everyone in London recycled everything they can, we could save £60 million next year.
How?
Take a tonne of recyclable materials, such as glass, cans or paper. If that tonne is put out for recycling, it costs your council an average of £100 to collect and process it. That material then works its way back into manufacturing to be used again and again.
Whereas getting rid of rubbish costs closer to £130 per tonne. What’s more, new EU directives mean London boroughs will be fined if they fail to achieve recycling targets. Throwing things away will only get more expensive and cost us all more.
When you consider London sent 1m tonnes of household waste to landfill last year, you realise the potential savings we could make if we all recycled more.
Every penny spent on landfilling rubbish is a waste of public money.
If you’re a Londoner who recycles, thank you for contributing to the £30 million London saved last year.
It all adds up. Let’s do even more this year!
