Christmas tree recycling - North London

Search for your borough below so you know exactly what to do when the time comes to recycle your Christmas tree in January.

Barnet

Recycle your Christmas tree by leaving it by the side of your green bin on your scheduled collection day. We will collect any tree with a trunk less than 8cm in diameter. Large Christmas trees will need to be cut into manageable peices. Alternatively, you can take your Christmas tree to the Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre.

Camden

Christmas tree recycling sites will be open from 3 January to 16 January 2012: Search for your nearest Christmas tree recycling site.

Trees with a trunk less than 15cm in diameter and no more than two metres in length can be left for collection. Larger trees should be presented in smaller lengths, tied in bundles.

Enfield

If you receive a kerbside recycling collection please put your tree out for collection with your garden waste on your usual collection day. Please make sure that all decorations, pots and turf are removed from your tree as these cannot be recycled. If your tree is taller than 6ft please take to one of the parks listed below or cut into smaller pieces as it cannot be collected otherwise.

Trees can also be taken to Barrowell Green Recycling Centre, Bury Lodge Depot or Albany, Broomfield, Grovelands, Jubilee, Pymmes, Town, Trent parks until the 8th January 2012.

Trees can be taken to Barrowell Green after this date.

Hackney

Recycled Christmas trees are taken to a composting facility in North London and made into compost which is then used on Hackney’s parks and green spaces .
Residents with a garden waste recycling service can leave their trees next to their brown bin on their regular collection day. You can also recycle your Christmas tree at: Millfields Depot, Millfields Road, E5. Residents can drop off trees between 8am and 3pm, Monday to Friday, and 8am to 12noon on Saturdays throughout January. Alternatively you can arrange a bulky waste collection from your property by calling the recycling hotline on 020 8356 6688. This service is free of charge up to four times a year.

Haringey

Help to cut carbon emissions and protect our parkland. When it is time to get rid of your Christmas tree, remember that it can be recycled and the bark shavings used in council gardens.
There are three possible ways to recycle your Christmas tree in Haringey, but before you use any of them please remember to remove all lights and decorations.

  • If you receive a green garden waste collection, you can cut your tree into smaller pieces (maximum length 1 metre or 3 feet) and put it out for collection. It is essential that your tree is cut into smaller pieces, otherwise it cannot be collected.
  • Christmas trees can also be taken to Haringey's Reuse and Recycling Centres (see the centres opening times section below for more information). Opening times Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm, locations Hornsey - 35 High Street, N8 7QB and Tottenham - Park View Road, N17 9AY
  • Alternatively, you can take them to designated sites in the following parks from Monday 9 January 2012 until Sunday 29 January 2012:
    - Woodside Park (Staff yard) – High Road, N22
    - Priory Park (Staff yard) - Barrington Road, N8
    - Albert Road Recreation Ground (Staff yard) - Bidwell Gardens, N11
    - Down Lane Recreation Ground (Staff yard) - Park View Road, N17
    - Downhills Park (Staff yard) - Downhills Park Road, N17
    - Bruce Castle Park (Staff yard) - Lordship Lane, N17
    - Finsbury Park (Staff yard) - Endymion Road, N4
    - The Gardens Community Garden – Doncaster Gardens, N4

Islington

If you live in a street property you can simply leave your Christmas tree at the edge of your property along with your normal green waste from Monday 2nd January 2012. If you live on an estate, please contact your Area Housing Office for more information on how to recycle your Christmas tree.
There will also be four sites in Islington parks for you to bring your Christmas tree to between Tuesday 3rd January and Monday 16th January:

  • King’s Square
  • Rosemary Gardens
  • Elthorne Park
  • Barnard Park.

The trees should only be left in the sign posted and enclosed tree collection areas and please remove all tree decorations.

The Household Reuse and Recycling Centre, Hornsey Street will also accept green waste and Christmas trees all year round.

Trees that appear after the Christmas tree period will be collected by the refuse/recycling crews on normal collection days.

Westminster

This year we have 19 recycling points for your Christmas trees. Simply deposit your tree at one of the drop off locations listed below between 2nd and 15th January 2012 and we'll ensure it is collected and recycled.

Before you take your tree to the recycling site please remove all decorations. Once collected the trees are sent to be chipped and composted.

REMEMBER: The drop off sites are only open between 8am and 8pm from Monday 2nd January to Tuesday 15th January 2012. Please do not deliver your tree outside these times.
